enforce old taxes more strictly 1763 = Britain Prime Minister, George Grenville = stop smuggling Smugglers tried by royally appointed judges Writs of assistance = officers can search almost anywhere for smuggled goods

4 II. The Sugar Act 1764 Lowered tax on molasses
Grenville hoped it would stop smuggling Allowed officers to seize British goods Colonist = angry = no trial by jury, not secure in homes

5 III. The Stamp Act 1765 Taxed all printed materials = newspapers, wills, playing cards, etc. Stamp on item showed tax was paid

Colonist Response Patrick Henry (VA House of Burgesses) passed a resolution declaring that HoB had “the only and sole exclusive right & power to lay taxes” Samuel Adams (Boston) starts Sons of Liberty Protest Burned effigies of unpopular tax collectors Delegates from 9 colonies met in NY Boycotts = refused to buy British goods

7 E. Result British businesses lose A LOT of money
Parliament repeals the Stamp Act in March 1776 Passes the Declaratory Act = Parliament has the right to tax and make decisions for the British colonies “in all cases”

8 IV. The Townshend Acts 1767 Result of the Stamp Act/boycotts
Tax on imported goods Glass, tea, and paper Paid when goods arrived before they were brought inside the colonies
