Heredity

The control center of our cells is the nucleus The control center of our cells is the nucleus. ½ of your chromosomes and genes come from your mother and ½ of your chromosomes and genes come from your father, which controls specific traits such as, eye color, hair color, height, and more. Genes do not control things such as walking or playing football, which are acquired traits.

Heredity – The process through which traits are passed from parents to offspring. Inherited Traits – Observable traits and characteristics that are passed down from one generation to the next.

Learned Behaviors – Behaviors that are learned from personal experiences such as table manners, riding a bike, and being potty trained Chromosome – A thread like package of genic information found in the cell nucleus. We get half of our total from each parent.

Genes – Units of hereditary information found in every living thing Genes – Units of hereditary information found in every living thing. These determine who you are and what you look like. Reproduction – The process by which plant and animal parents create offspring that contain a portion of the original parent body.

Crossbreeding – Producing offspring by mating individuals from two distinct breeds or varieties of the same species. Hybrid – Offspring of two parents from same species.

Offspring – The young of a person, animal, or plant.
