Independence -”We hold this truths to be self evident that all men are created equal and they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights life, liberty, pursuit of happiness” -1776 Congress declares independence from Britain -Thomas Jefferson writes Declaration of Independence uses many ideas from the Enlightenment period -John Locke –natural rights and right to revolt (overthrow government) -Popular sovereignty -July 4, 1776

The War -British had advantage w/large number of troops, money, and were stationed in major cities -Colonists controlled countryside -Washington emerged as a great general and strategist -Battle of Saratoga major turning point in the war -became allies with France giving much needed supplies, soldiers, and warships -Spain and Netherlands also become allies -1781 Washington gets Britain to surrender at Yorktown, VA -1783 Treaty of Paris signed officially ending the war.

Ideas from the Enlightenment -Rousseau- social contract -Montesquieu- separation of powers, three branches of government legislative(congress), Executive (president), judicial (supreme court) -Locke- government should protect the people, if abusive right to overthrow
