Warm Up Liz has 15 bags of chocolate cookies with 3 cookies in each bag. There are 2 extra cookies that are not in bags. How many cookies does Liz have in all? How do you know?

Using the cards from yesterday’s matching game… I will give each of you a card. In a few seconds, you will get up and walk around the room searching for the card that either has the steps for your expression or the expression that matches your steps. Once you have found your match, discuss how you are going to explain to the rest of the class how you both knew you were a match for each other.

3 + 2 x 4 (3 + 2) x 4 Copy these expressions in your notebook. Turn and talk to your elbow buddy about how these two expressions compare. DO NOT SOLVE! Appropriate response: In the first expression you will multiply 2 and 4 and then add 3. In the second expression you add 3 and 2 then multiply by 4 which will give a greater number because what you multiply 4 by will be great than the first expression!

Find Day 79, “Simple Expressions Traveling Files” Open your file and read the contents. As a cooperative group work together to compare the simple expressions listed. When the timer goes off (8 minutes), pass your file to the next group. When you receive the new file, open it and read the contents. Read the response the previous group gave carefully. As a cooperative group, respond to the rational the previous group gave by agreeing or disagreeing. Make sure to give evidence as to what made you say that. Do NOT solve the expressions! Compare just as we modeled in the previous slide!!
