Process Skills – Predicting Notes Quarter 1

Process Skills – Predicting Notes Predictions Forecasting future events based on the belief that cause and effect relationships exist in the natural world We use our past experiences and available data to make predictions

Process Skills – Predicting Notes Purpose Scientists make predictions to help make sense of the world around them and to understand cause and effect relationships

Process Skills – Predicting Notes Things to remember A prediction will not always turn out to be true A prediction is not a ‘guess’, we use information we already have to help in determining the outcome New data and observations may cause a scientist to change their prediction Predictions usually lead to testing and further investigations

Process Skills – Predicting Notes Example After testing 5 wood samples, Ben noted that they all floated in water. Based on this pattern, he predicted that his last wood sample would also float.

Process Skills – Predicting Notes Practice: Based on your performance in school for the last three years: Predict how many days of school you might miss this year. Predict your final grade in each of your core classes.
