Dividing Polynomials The long way

Long Division Usually when we divide trinomials (or larger) by binomials. (x2+4x-16)/(6+x) 1. Rewrite under the long division bar 2. Figure out how many times the lead term on the outside* goes into the lead term inside 3. Write that on top of the bar *Always write your divisor (thing on the outside) in descending order of degree.

Long Division 4. Multiply the whole thing on the outside (divisor) by the term you just wrote on top. 5. Subtract that from your dividend (thing under the bar) 6. Treat the answer from 5 as the new dividend. 7. Repeat 2-5 until you can’t divide what you get in 6 by your divisor

The remainder What you have left at the end is your remainder. You write this as a fraction; the number over the divisor
