Title: Reacting Metals with Oxygen WALT: Predict the pH of metal and non-metal oxides

Today we are going to see what happens when some metals and non-metals combine with oxygen Metals we will look at Non metals we will look at Magnesium Carbon Sodium Sulphur

Demonstrations – Metal Oxides: Magnesium burning in air What do you observe about the flame? What does the colour of the water tell you when you drop the burnt magnesium in with some universal indicator? What is the word equation for this? Sodium burning in water and air What does the colour of the Universal indicator tell you? Which gas was given off? What is the equation for this? What do you conclude about the pH of metal oxides?

Demonstration – Non Metal Oxides Burning of sulphur to get sulphur dioxide What colour does it turn the universal indicator and what does this tell us?

You will burn 2 candles and see what happens 1. 2. Water with Universal indicator Limewater Which gas is given off by the candle and was it acid or alkaline?

Now complete the following questions about metal extraction pp. 31 and 33 of KS3 Science “Materials” Use sub-headings and write in full sentences

Plenary – copy and complete: Many elements combine with oxygen in a process called oxidation to form compounds called………… Burning or combustion needs thermal energy to get it started. Metal oxides such as …………………… are alkaline, whereas non-metal oxides such as carbon dioxide are ………………….
