STATISTICS STATISTICS Numerical data. How Do We Make Sense of the Data? descriptively Researchers use statistics for two major purposes: (1) descriptively.
 I can identify the shape of a data distribution using statistics or charts.  I can make inferences about the population from the shape of a sample.

Presentation transcript:

Making Sense of Statistics: EQ: How do psychologists use charts and graphs to represent their statistics?

Positive Correlations: Expressed in positive numbered correlational coefficients (+0.01-1.00) The higher the number, the higher the correlation

Negative Correlations: Expressed in negative numbered correlational coefficients (-0.01-1.00) The Lower the number, the higher the correlation

What the Coefficients Mean: The higher the number, the more likely variable a and variable b are related The lower the number, the less likely variable a and variable b are related

Standard Deviation: Can be expressed in a bell curve The shape of the curve tells us how much deviation there is (This one represents perfect deviation)

Skewed Deviation: When one or multiple of the results throws off the standard deviation, we end up with a skewed bell graph like the one below

Standard Deviation Formula:
