Martin Luther By Arwen Hine

Who was Martin Luther? Martin Luther was a German professor of theology, a composer, a priest, a monk and a seminal figure in the Protestant Reformation.

What did Martin Luther do? In 1501 he entered the University of Erfart. He then received a Master of Arts degree. At this time it seemed he was on his way to becoming a lawyer.

When and where was Martin Luther born? He was born on November 10th, 1483 in Eisleben, Germany.

When and where did Martin Luther do the important things he did? October 31st, 1517 at the Catholic Churches door.

Why did Martin Luther challenge the Catholic Church? The Roman pope sent monks out to Germany to sell indulgences. Those indulgences were letters from the pope which promised the people who bought them that they would not have to suffer so long and so much for their sins.

How did Martin Luther challenge the Catholic Church? Luther wrote a list of 95 complaints about indulgences and other subjects he was unhappy about. This document became known as the 95 Theses. Martin Luther took this document to his local church in Wittenburg and nailed it to the door so everyone could read it.

How did the Catholic Church try and stop Martin Luther? The pope had Martin Luther arrested and brought to the city of Worms, Germany. There the pope ordered Luther to take back the 95 Theses and anything else he said against the church otherwise he would be excommunicated. To be excommunicated means not to be able to be a member of the Catholic Church.
