Math Vocabulary Mrs Knight 7th Grade

Axis it’s a line and it can be either X or Y on a grid. X is the independent variable and Y is the dependent variable.

Coordinate Plane it’s the plane that is formed when the X and Y axis intercept

Variable it’s a quantity that changes or that can have different amounts

Independent Variable it’s a quantity that stands alone (EXAMPLE: ‘time’, it doesn’t need anything else to exist)

Dependent Variable it’s a quantity that changes but in order to change it needs help (EXAMPLE: ‘money’, in order to make money you need to work)

Ordered Pair or Coordinate Pair it’s a point formed by the X and Y axis.

Origin it’s the point where the X and Y axis intercept

Y intercept it’s where the line crosses the Y axis

Linear relationship it’s when the change is constant and repeats, on a graph it would be a line (EXAMPLE : Every month the seventh grader makes $10.00 babysitting)

Slope it’s the inclination or steepness of a line

Equation of a Line y = mx + b m is the slope b is the y- intercept
