Theme Statement: Is one sentence Voices author’s message about the subject. Ex: People overcome fear through courage. Does NOT give advice (avoid words like “should” and “don’t”) Is NOT a cliché. (NOT Don’t judge a book by its cover) Is NOT a command (NOT People should be courageous.) Is NOT a definition. (NOT Courage is being brave in the face of adversity.) Does not Include “you” or “I” (NOT You should overcome fear through courage.) Does not include characters from the story

Is it a good Theme Sentence? Work with a partner. Each pair will get a theme sentence. Using the criteria in the previous slide, determine if your sentence is a good theme sentence. If not, revise it on your own paper and be ready to share.
