Presentation transcript:

Warm-up A ladder with its foot on a horizontal flat surface rests against a wall. It makes an angle of 30° with the horizontal. The foot of the ladder is 41 ft from the base of the wall. Find the height of the point where the ladder touches the wall.

Angle of Elevation and Depression Day 4

Examples A meteorologist (whose eyes are 6’ from the ground) measures the angle of elevation of a weather balloon at 41 degrees. A radio signal from the balloon indicates it is 1587 feet from her location. To the nearest foot, how high above the ground is the balloon?

Example Anna spotted her car from a hot air balloon. She knows her altitude is 82 meters and her angle of depression is 32 degrees. She wants to know how far she is from her car. Draw a picture and and solve. Round to the nearest meter.

Example Shawn spotted his model rocket from a launch stuck in a tree. He knows the base of the tree is 19 ft from the launch site. The rocket is 23 feet up from the ground. He needs to calculate the angle of elevation so he can make adjustments for future launches. Round to the nearest degree. Draw a picture use trigonometry to find the angle.

Example Christa, whose eyes are 5.5 feet from the ground, is flying a kite. The angle of elevation from Christa to the kite is 63 degrees. If the string is 40 feet long, how high in the air is the kite?

Practice in Groups You have 30 minutes to work in your groups on solving the four problems handed out. Your final work must be neatly presented on a poster with pictures/diagrams included. Your answers will be checked and critiqued by another group, so do your best!! 
