Section 4.1 Atomic Theory and Structure

A) Atomic theory Atomic theory : the theory that everything is made of tiny particles called atoms.

B) Atomic Structure Atoms are made of three subatomic particles Subatomic Particle: Any particle in an atom that is smaller than the atom. Table 4.1 The Three Subatomic Particles.

Simple Drawing of an atom

C) Introduction to the Periodic Table Common ion charge Other ion charge Name Symbol Atomic number Average atomic mass

Nucleus: The Centre of the atom where the protons and neutrons are found. Orbital Path/Shell: The Space that the electron uses when it travels around the nucleus. Each ELEMENT has a different number of protons and neutrons in its nucleus.

D) Matter

E) Dalton’s Atomic Theory In 1803, John Dalton proposed the Atomic Theory to distinguish elements from non-elements. All matter is made of atoms. Atoms of the same element are identical. Atoms of different elements can combine (come together) to form compounds. Chemical reactions occur when atoms are sepperate, join or are rearranged.

Periodic Table Square Make a square of a period table for your class Must have: atomic number, # protons, # electrons, average atomic mass, name, symbol, Where is this atom naturally found? How is it used?
