#learning Today we will transform word problems into equations. So that we can find the solution to a given problem. Keys to Success: Find a, find b, and write the equation Input x or y to solve for the missing value

Example 1 Shonda is collecting canned goods for her school to donate this year. She has 80 at home and gathers 20/hour. If she continues at this rate, how long will it take Shonda to reach her goal of 500 cans? x: hours y = 20x +80 y: cans let y = 500 500 = 20x + 80 -80 -80 420 = 20x 20 20 x = 21 It would take Shonda 21 hours to collect 500 cans!

Example 2 Santa is working on his naughty list. He already has a certain number of kids listed and is adding more! After 30 minutes, he has 1100 kids, and after 90 minutes, he has 1700! If Santa continues at this rate, how many kids will he have after 3 hours? x: minutes a = y2 – y1 = 1700 – 1100 = 600 = 10 y: naughty kids x2 – x1 90-30 60 (30, 1100) (90, 1700) b = y – ax b = 1100 – (10)(30) b = 1100 – 300 b = 800 y = 10x +800

Example 2 Continued The Equation is y = 10x +800 Let x = 3 hours = 3 x 60 minutes = 180 minutes y = 10x +800 y = 10(180) +800 y = 1800+800 y = 2600 After three hours, Santa now has 2600 kids on his naughty list. 
