Academic Advising

What is advising? The primary purpose of the academic advising program is to assist students in the development of meaningful educational plans that are compatible with their life goals. Academic advising has an impact on retention, academic success of students, and the students' career choice process.

Beliefs and Boundaries of Academic Advising (from National academic advising association [NACADA])

Academic Advising: Purpose We are educators. Student learning and personal development. The responsibility for advising is shared among both academic advisors and faculty.

Academic Advising: Pedagogy Methods that employ active and collaborative learning tactics. Recognize the social nature of learning.

Requires collaboration between educator and student. Advising is Teaching Requires collaboration between educator and student. Involves rational, goal-directed behavior. Focus on problem-solving, decision-making and evaluation skills. Add source –this is direct from NACADA vol 27 (2) fa07

Academic Advising: Context Circumstances call for the formation and implementation of educational and life plans. Advising practices are conditioned by policies and practices. Educationally compelling circumstances calling for the formation and implementation of educational and life plans. Advising practices are conditioned by the policies and practices that shape the limits and potentialities for achieving student goals.

ACADEMIC ADVISING: FOCUS The focus is on the whole student and developing realistic plans for his or her life and career. Students have lives outside of the classroom and lot of different circumstances. Not just a student taking a class.

ACADEMIC ADVISING: CONTENT Student and advisor construct knowledge about the student’s opportunities and plans. How can goals be realized. Important to use educational planning. Important to help student set realistic goals of courses (load), graduation, transfer, and career decision. Look at long term course requirement as well as the short term of “this semester”.
