Presentation transcript:

Do Now Respond to the following prompt in 3-5 complete sentences. Identify the person that is influencing your life and explain how they are influencing you.

Influences on Career Choices Guiding Question: What factors influence career choice?

Influences on Career Choices Everything and everyone around you can influence your choice of career. The people you know -- your family, teachers, friends, coaches, community members, and others -- often have the greatest effect on your career decisions. These individuals can play both a positive and negative role. By understanding how the many influences affect you, you will be able to make the choices that lead to career success.

Jigsaw Reading Activity Divide into 4 groups. One student from each group will be the group leader. Each group will be assigned one section of today’s reading. Within your group, you will read over your assigned segment (this can be done individually or aloud, your group can decide). Annotate, highlight, take notes, and/or answer the guiding questions for your assigned segment. Each group should be prepared to explain their segment to the class.

Guiding Questions How does the power of influences affect your career decisions? How have people influenced your decisions and you? What are you work and social environmental preferences? What values influence you?

Present Your Section to the Class Prepare a summary of your assigned section. Be sure to know the vocabulary, main ideas, and guiding questions for your segment.

Influences in Your Life Activity List all of the people that you feel are influencing you currently or have influenced you. Decide whether the interaction is positive or negative. Discuss the role that each person has played in your life.

Exit Ticket - Homework Introduction Interview a family member and list his/her previous and current career choices. Ask him/her about which factors are the most important or influential when choosing a career.
