4.3 | Open-Ended Questions

STEP 1 - LEARN Look at the 7-Minute Starter Visual Variety Checklist, reading the list of types of photos that should be considered for every spread. Clarify any questions about what each type is.

STEP 2 - PRACTICE Use the checklist on Handout 4.3a and look at the following yearbook spreads together to discuss the photographic strategies that were used.

Castleview High School [CO] Effective yearbook spreads have a visual variety that is created through careful planning. The photos must each show different parts of the story. Photographers and designers must consider how each of the following best tells the story. They then decide on a mix of photo types to include on a spread. Consider the yearbook spreads in the presentation and discuss which of the following are included in each spread and how they work together to effectively tell the story. Castleview High School [CO]

Dos Pueblos High School [CA]

Glenbrook South High School [IL]

Green Valley High School [NV]

Mounds Park Academy [MN]

STEP 3 - USE Using Handout 4.3b – Visual Clip File, study magazines, newspapers and websites for creative approaches to presenting visual content. Bring this work back to the class to discuss.
