Properties of Water Vocab

WATER 2 hydrogen and 1 oxygen molecule bonded together, the universal solvent

SOLUTION homogeneous mixture where one substance is dissolved into another and mixed evenly throughout (salt water)

SOLUTE a substance that is dissolved into another substance (salt)

SOLVENT a substance that dissolves another substance (water)

POLAR a molecule with a positive end and a negative end

SURFACE TENSION the tightness across the surface of water caused by polar molecules pulling on each other

ADHESION the process of a molecule “sticking” to another substance or surface

COHESION the “sticking” together of molecules of the same substance

CAPILLARY ACTION the movement of a liquid upward defying gravity

BUOYANCY the tendency of an object to float in water
