Chapter 1 Earth: The Water Planet Section 2 The Properties of Water

Water’s Unique Structure Atoms can combine to form molecules 2 hydrogen atoms + 1 oxygen atom H 2 O molecule

Water’s Unique Structure When a molecule has areas with a slight electric charge, it is a polar molecule. The oxygen end = slight negative charge (-) The hydrogen ends = slight positive charge (+)

Water’s Unique Structure Opposite charges attract, so water molecules will attract to each other like this…

Surface Tension Surface tension is the tightness across the surface of water that is caused by the polar molecules pulling on each other.

Capillary Action The combined force of attraction among water molecules with the molecules of surrounding materials is called capillary action. And causes water to move through things with small openings.

Water, the Universal Solvent A solution is a mixture that forms when one substance dissolves another. The substance that does the dissolving is called the solvent, like water (because it is polar and attracts other substances).

Changing States FREEZING LiquidSolid

Changing States MELTING SolidLiquid

Changing States EVAPORATION Liquid Gas

Changing States CONDENSATION GasLiquid

Why Ice Floats vs.

Specific Heat Specific heat is the amount of heat needed to increase the temperature of an object by 1 。 C Water needs more heat that most substances for it to raise its temperature.
