Static Electricity

Electrical Energy – the energy of moving electrons Electrical Energy – the energy of moving electrons. Atoms are made up of protons, neutrons, & electrons.

Static electricity is the result of the transfer of electrons Static electricity is the result of the transfer of electrons. The imbalance of positive and negative charges.

Same/like charges move apart, or repel each other. Opposite charges move together, or attract each other.

Static Electricity Most objects have no overall charge and are neutral. Uncharged objects become charged by gaining or losing electrons. If it LOSES electrons it will have a POSITIVE charge. If it GAINS electrons it will have a NEGATIVE charge.

QOD # 27 What colors of the visible light spectrum are ABSORBED when you see a blue shirt?

Balloon and water

QOD #28 List the wavelengths in the Electromagnetic Spectrum in order. (Hint: Start with radio waves…)

Static discharge – the release of static electricity when two objects are left neutral after the discharge. Can occur slowly – when your hair loses its static charge over a couple of minutes. Can occur quickly – when you get shocked when you touch something; another example is lightening.

Extension Lab - Challenge Only Question Hypothesis Data Table Basic conclusion

Static Electricity Investigation Complete the activity sheet. Turn it in when you are finished.

Explain what static discharge is. QOD #76 Explain what static discharge is.

Static Electricity Lab For this lab, you will be deciding what you are going to test. Your group will be given a balloon to rub against a material and try to pick up pieces of paper. You will count how many pieces of paper the balloon picks up. You must decide whether you are testing the type of material you rub against the balloon (shirt, sweater, desk, etc.) or the type of material you are picking up (white paper, colored paper, notebook paper, etc.)

For your experiment, write your … Purpose: Question: Materials: IV: DV: Constants:

Hypothesis: If___________________________, then ___________________________________, because ________________________________. Procedures: (write numbered steps that someone else could follow)

Qualitative Observations: Data Table: (Create a data table) Qualitative Observations:

QOD #77 Describe how static electricity affects your everyday life. (Think about when you have gotten “zapped”.)

Graph & Power Conclusion Create a graph (choose the appropriate kind) that has a title (with the IV/DV in it) and labels. Write a power conclusion. (Glue the template into the resource section of your NB.)
