Chapter 4 “The Atlantic World” Section 1 Notes

Spain Builds an American Empire Fierce competiton all throughout Europe for wealth. In hopes of finding wealth and resources Christopher Colombus set sail to find route to Asia but landed in the Caribbean islands. Called natives Indians. Not indians but were really a group called the Taino. Claimed the island for Spain and called it San Salvador. ( Holy Savior)

Was interested in finding Gold Gathered supplies and resources and sailed back to Spain a year later. Monarchy so happy that they financed 3 more trips! Commanded 17 ships and 1,000 soldiers, crewmen and colonists. Set down roots and create colonies.

Ferdrand Magellan sailed around the tip of South America Set out with 250 men and 5 ships Stopped off in the Philipeens for supplies and got involved in a local tribal war and died. Due to disease, starvation, and war, only 18 made it back home alive with 1 ship. First to circumnaviage around the world.

Spanish Conquests in Mexico In 1519 Hernando Cortes a spanish explorer landed on the shores of Mexico. Was a conquistador (conquorer) Would carve out large parts of mexico and turn them into colonies. Hope to find silver and gold. Spanish were the first European settlers in the Americas

Cortes conquors the Aztecs Aztec Empire very wealthy He and his 600 men marched for weeks until they found the capital city of Technoticilan At first they thought he was a God Because of this they gave him gold Lust for gold and power became too much and soon tribal leaders were killed and Cortes and his men were forced out.

Struck back with a vengeance in 1521 and conquered the Empire. Advantage of superior weaponry (muskets) (armor) (Horses) Aligned with enemies of the Aztecs Largest contributor to Cortes winning was the invisible warrior “smallpox”

Spanish Conquests in Peru Francisco Pizzaro marched a small force in south America called the Incans. Pizzaro marched with 200 men and met with the Incan leader Atahualpa who commanded 30,000 men. Turns out it was an ambush. Spaniards crushed the Incans and took their leader hostage. He offered gold and silver for his release

They took the ransom and strangled him for good measure. Demoralized the Incans retreated and Pizarro marched into the capital city of Cuzco and took it without a struggle Relationships will build over time and European and Mexican children will be born creating mestizo bloodline. Forced labor will become a thing and encomienda ( slave labor)

Natives lash out Over time the Spanish will take over much of North and South America. Will start colonies and expand their sphere of influence. Natives are losing lifestyle and lands and therefore will lash out and try to attack and drive off the Europeans and while they do win some battles here and there, in the long run the European advancements in technology win out.
