Course Description This course explores social, economic, and political developments and events and their impact on the lives of different groups in Canada since 1914. Students will examine the role of conflict and cooperation in Canadian society, Canada’s evolving role within the global community, and the impact of various individuals, organizations, and events on Canadian identity, citizenship, and heritage. They will develop their ability to apply the concepts of historical thinking and the historical inquiry process, including the interpretation and analysis of evidence, when investigating key issues and events in Canadian history since 1914. In addition, pre-IB students will develop fundamental skills to help them prepare effectively for the internal and external assessments experienced at the senior level in the Diploma Programme.

EVALUATION You are going to assessed in a different way in this academic stream (IB)- it is more holistic in approach and attempts to assess your overall educational ability rather than just your knowledge or your ability to follow instructions* Term Work 70% Daily activities Unit tests Independent writing tasks Essays Historical Investigation- IB Expectation Demonstrating understanding Final Evaluations 30%

How do we achieve success in this class? History is not math or science- it is an “art” that uses methods similar to science and math None of your are special, you are not entitled to success in this class- it must be learned, you will fail, you will make mistakes and finally you will become proficient at what you can do Focus, attention, review, attempt/take risks, challenge and RESPECT for academic work Some details- read, time management, communicate with me- a lot

Students are expected to be able to DO: Inquiry- Assess Significance Assess the justification for competing accounts of history after investigating Compare and contrast- Identify Change and Continuity Understand causes and consequences (people’s actions or events or conditions?) Make reasoned ethical judgements about actions/events in the past

REMEMBER… If you can google the answer, that’s not understanding history, nor should that be rewarded.
