FITA Judges Training Aid – February 2011 MATCH PLAY - INDIVIDUAL

FITA Judges Training Aid – February 2011 What is the Match Play? Match Play is used as the second stage to a championship competition, which in itself consists of two further stages; the Elimination Round, and the Finals Round. During both rounds archers compete against one another, head to head, according to a seeding chart, where the winner of a match eliminates his opponent, and proceeds to the next round. The Olympic Round is shot at the 70m distance on 122cm faces. The Compound Round is shot at 50m on 80cm faces, 6 ring targets.

FITA Judges Training Aid – February 2011 In Match Play arrows rebounding, passing through the butt or hanging from it will not stop the competition. No extra time for equipment failure or unexpected medical problems. What is the Match Play? At the end of the match, athletes or their agents must sign the score card. By doing so, they indicate that they agree on the sum total, the number of Xs and 10s and who is the winner.

FITA Judges Training Aid – February 2011 Elimination Round: 104 athletes (World Championships) 64 Athletes (Olympics), who are seeded according to their position in the Qualification Round. Byes are permitted. During match play, the position of the archers on the shooting line will follow the match –play chart as shown in the Book 2 of the C&R Match Play – Elimination Round

FITA Judges Training Aid – February 2011 Match Play – Elimination Round During the 1/48 th, 1/32 nd and 1/16 th Elimination rounds there may be two athletes per target butt, however, during the 1/8 th Elimination Round, athletes will shoot on separate target butts. (World Championships) Archers who have been assigned a bye, or archers that have a forfeited match will advance to the next round of the eliminations. At World Championships they may practice on the practice field or the unused portion of the competition field. (Other competitions they may practice on the assigned targets)

FITA Judges Training Aid – February 2011 Match Play – Elimination Round During the elimination round, recurve division archers shoot simultaneously 5 ends of 3 arrows (2 minutes). – Set system to be applied Whilst in the compound division archers shoot simultaneously, 5 ends of 3 arrows (2 minutes), for cumulative score.

FITA Judges Training Aid – February 2011 Match Play – Elimination Round Athletes will go to the target butts to participate in scoring and in the collection of arrows. Timing signals will be given to athletes to proceed to the shooting line ( 2 beeps), 10 (ten) seconds later to start shooting (one beep), stop shooting (2 beeps), proceed to scoring (3 beeps)

FITA Judges Training Aid – February 2011 During the Finals Round; Quarter Finals, Semi-Finals and the Medals matches, alternate shooting will be used, one athlete per target butt. The position of the archers on the shooting line will follow the positions indicated in the match play charts, the highest placed archer in the qualification round decides the order of shooting. Twenty (20) seconds is the time allowed for an athlete to shoot one arrow when shooting alternately (including tie breaks). Match Play – Finals Round & Medals Matches The recurve division shoot 5 ends of three arrows using the set system of points ( first archer to reach 6 set points wins), whilst the compound division shoot 5 ends of three arrows using the cumulative points system.

In both divisions if the athletes are tied, the athlete who shot first in the first end, shoots first in the shoot- off. Athletes do not participate during scoring and must therefore appoint an archers agent to observe the scoring, to withdraw the athletes arrows, and to mark the arrow holes.
