First meeting of the LIS section: Welcome to the new members!! Elias Métral Y. Papaphilippou G. Rumolo B. Salvant

First meeting of the New Section Extend the meeting to relevant people when R&D aspects are involved: in particular LINAC4 injection into PSB and PS2 We might need to have more frequent meetings (max. 2/month) to cover properly R&D (LINAC4 inj. In the PSB and PS2) and in particular during machine operation. Is Monday at 09:00 OK? Shall we try 10:30-12:00

Some Changes: MD Coordination: G. Arduini  E. Métral PS Supervision: Y. Papaphilippou SPS Supervision: G. Arduini  E. Métral

OP days (7-8/2/2007) A few points concerning LEIR operation: Need to improve diagnostics from CCC Alarms and display needed in CCC Important to train people “on the field”  from CCC Procedures to be extended and improved

APC 02/02-09/02 Radiation levels increased in Linac 2 and PSBooster and SPS (in the extraction area) Significant reduction of the losses in TT2 (it has been realigned vertically) Results of the wire scanner calibration in PSB: non reproducibility observed vs. time and vs. electronic chain. Same for the PS. A test bench is being assembled to study this phenomenon so to collect data to propose a new design by the end of 2007.

Visit to Fermilab and PAC07 SPC 12-13/2 @ FNAL: Budgetary situation unclear After the announcement of the ILC cost (~15 B$): Neutrino program with main injector and 8 GeV proton driver seems now to have again interest Muon Factory Task force: assess and prioritize R&D required for a muon collider. (interesting ideas at the Low Emittance Muon Collider WS): main issue is the ionization cooling

Visit to Fermilab and PAC07 SPC Discussion with M. Popovic and F. Ostiguy: Possible interest in collaborating on the LINAC4 studies (e.g. partecipation to an experiment to assess space charge phenomena at PSB) Warned that the upgrade of the FNAL linac from 200 MeV to 400 MeV did not give immediately the expected results because the space charge was not the only intensity limitation (problem with edge effects of some magnets in the injection area). Warning that ORBIT might still have problems with acceleration (in particular multi-harmonic) and dealing with functions for injection bumps They could help (FO) in modifying the code if required. FO participated in the writing of the code. Physics is the same as in ACCSIM

Next meeting Next meeting (5/3/2007) – proposed agenda: General issues (GA) LINAC4 parameters – present status - AL Possible experiment in the PSB (or PS?) to benchmark the space charge codes: what has been done so far, what could be done? - MC+CC What the simulation codes expect for the highest intensity beam we can have in the PSB at intermediate energy (e.g. @ 160 MeV) - MM
