Lesson 2.2 Linear Regression

Slope and y-intercept Do the investigation on page 171 #1-3 (use Excel for #2)

Definitions Interpolation: make predictions in scatter plots by estimating between data points. Extrapolation: made predictions in scatter plots by estimating beyond the range of the data. Outlier: points in a set of data that are significantly far from the majority of the other data.

Residual The vertical deviation of each data point from the line of best fit Residuals are positive for points above the line, and negative for points below the line.

Effects of Outliers Textbook see example 3 on page 177. Complete a) to d) in Excel.

Practice Questions Page 180 #1, 2 (excel), 4, 5, 7 When the question says “use linear regression to model these data” or “apply the method of the least squares” use EXCEL of find the equation of the line and r2 value. Practice Questions
