Rotation On a coordinate grid. For a Rotation, you need An angle or fraction of a turn –Eg 90° or a Quarter Turn –Eg 180° or a Half Turn A direction –Clockwise.

Today we will be learning to: recognise and describe how to turn things recognise half and quarter turns to the left or right understand the terms clockwise and anti-clockwise.

Mental Activity What do we know about the number 10? How many ideas about 10 do you have?

10

Main Activity Today we are going to learn about things that turn and the different turning movements that are possible.

A volunteer is needed. What happened to you? Did you turn or spin?

What is the difference between turning and spinning? Turn means moving around on the spot. A spin is a fast turn.

Another word for turn is rotate. What other things turn?

The teacher needs a new volunteer. What is a left turn? What is a right turn?

The teacher needs a new volunteer. What is a half turn? What is a quarter turn? The teacher needs a new volunteer.

If you take a quarter turn left, which way will you face? If you take a half turn right, which way will you face? How much of a turn do you need to do to get back to where you started?
