Department of Architecture University of Arkansas ARCH 3144 – TECH IV Department of Architecture University of Arkansas BUILDING SYSTEMS AND DESIGN INTEGRATION "The woman making the coat has no interest in making a coat, per se, but in making someone warm. She could do this by putting her arms around a shivering person, but instead she accomplishes her goal by indirection - by making the object which then remakes the human site that is her actual object .... the coat-maker is working not to make the artifact (which is just the midpoint in the total action), but to remake human sentience." Elaine Scarry, The Body in Pain

BUILDING SYSTEMS AND DESIGN INTEGRATION The course covers Fundamental concepts of environmental technology in architecture. Environmental Technology includes all building systems that affect the function of the building and the comfort of the occupants: hvac, lighting, plumbing, fire protection and indoor air quality. Critical issues of how building systems are integrated into an overall design the processes by which systems are selected, and the recognition that passive and active systems can be significant generators of architectural form.   Tech IV provides the student Critical thinking skills through a sequence of interrelated exercises Significant training in the process of environmental system design Ability to communicate effectively with engineering consultants Proactive role with regard to system selection, design, and integration.

PROJECT I VAV SYSTEMS WITH VARIABLE FREQUENCY DRIVE FANS THERMAL ZONING FOR HVAC SYSTEMS DISTRIBUTION PROJECT I VAV SYSTEMS WITH VARIABLE FREQUENCY DRIVE FANS Alenya Becker, Nathalie Blair, Jason Jackson, Shena Mitchell Perspective Looking North Towards Glass Curtain Wall First Floor: Delineation of Thermal Zones Second Floor: Delineation of Thermal Zones Interiors of a building demand different supplies of heating and cooling because their exposure to the sun changes through the day. Other factors such as occupants and the use of electric light also add heat to the rooms.
