EDCTP2 - Opportunities for clinical research on poverty-related diseases in sub-Saharan Africa. Every Mother, Every Child: Closing the Gaps in HIV Management AIDS 2016 20 July 2016, Durban South Africa ' Gabrielle Breugelmans | North North Networking Manager | The Hague

Our mission To reduce poverty and improve health in sub-Saharan Africa by funding collaborative research to accelerate the development of new or improved medical interventions against poverty-related and neglected infectious diseases.

Who we are EDCTP is a public-public partnership between 14 European & 14 sub-Saharan African countries & the European Union Association under Dutch private law as a non-profit organisation Established in 2003 by a co-decision of the European Parliament and Council: Article 185 Initiative Pool research activities to achieve greater impact PRDs Promote integrated approach to clinical health research in Europe In response to MDGs and global health crises caused by PRDs No economic incentive for private investments in PRDs Public investments sparse and know-how fragmented

EDCTP portfolio 2003-2015 - Overview Prevention of mother-to-child transmission: Teh Kesho Bora study that looked at preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV during breastfeeding found that giving HIV positive mothers a combination of 3 antiretroviral drugs during pregnancy, delivery and breastfeeding cuts HIV infections in infants by 43% by the age of 1 year and reduces transmissions during breastfeeding by 54% compared with the previously recommended ARV drug regimen stopped at delivery. The study results supported the 2010 WHO guidelines on this topic. The PROMISE-PEP trial showed that two liquid formulations of HIV drugs are safe and highly effective at protecting infants from infection while they are breastfed by their HIV-positive mothers. Paediatric/adolescent trials: the data from the phase III CHAPAS-3 trial supported FDA approval and registration of a paediatric ARV formulation (Pedimune) in SSA. WHO now recommends fixed dose combinations with abacavir for children in need of first line treatment KESHO BORA study PROMISE-PEP trial CHAPAS trials

Calls for proposals 2016 - Timelines EDCTP’s research priorities for 2016, among other areas, include a call for proposals that aims to support actions on preventive and therapeutic clinical interventions of postregistration products, as well as related behavioural studies, aimed at optimising the use of new or improved products or combinations of products for mothers, newborns, children and/or adolescents. The activities funded under this call may include: studies on product (drugs, vaccines, microbicides and diagnostics) development, delivery, uptake and adherence; and strategies for equitable and full-scale access to diagnostics, prevention and treatment interventions. This includes community-based interventions/approaches and qualitative studies. Type of action: Research and Innovation Action (RIA) Call budget:€ 10M Maximum funding:€ 3M Funding level:100% of eligible costs Stage 1 Open date: 7 July 2016, 17:00 Stage 1 Close date: 29 September 2016, 17:00 Stage 2 Open date: 22 December 2016, 17:00 Stage 2 Close date: 2 March 2017
