An action verb is something you can do.

jump run swim

If the action is being done by one person, the verb will need to end with the letter s.

Bob _____ his bike. ride rides

If the action is being done by more than one person, the verb will not need the letter s added.

Dad and I _____ cereal. eat eats eat

Verbs can tell what the action is was in the past or what the action will be in the future.

Add –ed to the end of base words to make verbs that tell about the past. Yesterday I jumped rope. jump + ed = jumped

To make a verb tell about the future, use the word “will” in front of it. Tomorrow I will jump rope again!

Toad jumped. Toad will jump. Past Future

The dog ________ at me last night. will bark barked

My cat ________ when I pet her. will purr purred
