Insulators and Conductors Objective: Describe insulators and conductors. Identify materials that are good insulators and conductors.

How is the saying, “opposites attract” related to electric charges? Science Starter How is the saying, “opposites attract” related to electric charges?

Electric Charges

Insulators A material in which electrons cannot move easily from place to place is called an insulator. Examples of insulators are plastic, wood, and rubber.

What are Insulators? Insulators are materials that do not allow heat to move easily through them.

What do Insulators help do?

Paper

Conductors Materials that are conductors contain electrons that can move more easily in the material. Examples: metals, iron, copper

What are Conductors? Conductors are materials that allow heat to move easily through them.

Examples Metal Paper clips Silverware Water

Both The electric wire is made from a conductor coated with an insulator such as plastic.
