Outline What is constellation? How many constellations are there in the sky? Is “Big Dipper ” in the constellations? What is zodiac?

What is constellation? Since the beginning of recorded time , stars have played a large role in religions and even navigation . North star was a example of stars . This star was called the North star because it always points you north . In ancient civilizations they noticed that the stars in our sky form patterns . There were called constellations .

How many constellations are there in the sky? In 1929 , the international Astronomical Union officially recognized 88 constellations. To date , these are the only “official ” constellations.

Is “Big Dipper ” in the constellations? Surprisingly , the Big Dipper is not one of the 88 constellations . Because the Big Dipper is found within the constellation of Ursa Major . This makes it useful in celestial navigation.

What is zodiac? Twelve of these constellations are in a line along the equator , and because of their position , were picked out from all the other constellations to make up the zodiac .It is important to note that the study of these signs in relation to determining one’s fortune or characteristic is astrology(horoscope) ,and is completely unrelated to astronomy.
