Acceleration

Bell Ringer (9/16) Describe the motion of the graph below.

Lets look at the v vs. t graph…. How is the velocity changing over time for the previous graph? Time Velocity

Acceleration

Acceleration The rate at which an object changes its velocity and/or direction

Using terms we’ve learned, what does this pedal do? What pedal is this? Using terms we’ve learned, what does this pedal do? Changes the rate of speed over time

Acceleration Acceleration occurs when an object Speeds up (+) Slows down (-) Change in direction

Galileo rolled balls down a series of ramps. As the ramps got higher, the balls rolled at a greater speed. Their speed increased. Galileo said that they were….. Accelerating.

Positive & Negative Acceleration Positive acceleration “speeding up” Negative acceleration “slowing down”

Graphing Acceleration Distance Time Time Velocity

Graphing Acceleration Distance Time Time Velocity

Describe the motion in each of these graphs. Time Velocity Distance Time

Practice Problem Describe the motion of the object at each part on the graphs. Time Velocity D E F Distance Time A B C

Bell Ringer 9/19 Which of the following is not accelerating? A car slowing to a stop at a stop sign You riding a Ferris Wheel The moon orbiting the Earth A cyclist riding constantly at 2 m/s on a straight path

Kinematic Curves w/s
