Mrs. Wharton’s Science Class

 Is the rate at which velocity changes  Acceleration involves a change in either speed or direction  In science acceleration refers to increasing speed, decreasing speed or changing direction

 Any time the speed of an object changes (positive or negative)  Negative acceleration- slowing down or decrease in speed.  Anytime the direction of an object changes  An object continuously change direction without changing speed. Motion around a circular path ( moon) is an example of this

 To determine the acceleration of an object moving in a straight line you must calculate the change in speed per unit of time.  Acceleration= final velocity-initial velocity/ Time

 You can use both a speed vs. time graph and a distance vs. time graph to analyze the motion of an accelerating object.  Slanted strait line- acceleration is constant  You can find acceleration by finding the slope of a line. Rise/run  A graph of distance vs time for an accelerating object is curved.
