PLC Learning Gathering #4

Acknowledgment of Territory

Collaborative Inquiry Process School Share Outs & Discussions Agenda 12:30pm-3:00pm Check-in Activity Collaborative Inquiry Process Break School Share Outs & Discussions PLC Survey

Whole school shared data & Because of PLC… Whole school shared data & discussed Collaborate with all staff Time to learn

Intentions Discuss the benefits of PLCs Discuss to major shared challenges and shared solutions How to increase staff engagement? How to use data to drive inquiries?

Norms for our PLC Gatherings We value smaller group work so there is more space for all to speak. We will contribute openly - be vulnerable - build trust. We will listen to learn, listen deeply, listen to understand – without interrupting.

District PLC Gathering: Beliefs in Action Student Learning TRUST Collaboration Data Responsive to change

NLPS Collaborative Inquiry Cycle

PLC and Inquiry

The Collaborative Inquiry Process Focuses on student learning Foundational skills Occurs in small recurring cycles Relies on commitment and accountability Informed by the best available research & practices Based on trying new approaches Measured by evidence of impact This what PLC inquiries should reflect.

Whole School Goal How can we differentiate our instruction to improve student achievement in literacy and numeracy? Playful Targeted Phonological Skills Reading Power Strategies to improve comprehension Explicit instruction on 6+1 writing trait strategies Targeted Numeracy Instruction Smaller PLC Inquiries Complex vowels purposeful centres Inferencing with non-fiction Sentence fluency Number Sense play based centres Small PLC Inquiries

PLC Inquiries… Over a short (1-4 week period), teacher teams put a PLAN(strategy) into ACTION, OBSERVE and collect evidence of student progress and REFLECT on the impact. Turn and Talk and Share

Your Turn…

minimal participation Last time… we discussed Barriers to PLCs PLC not connected to data lack measurable data disconnected quantifying results lack of Investment minimal participation Staff Engagement Data Driven Inquiries limited attention unfocused time not valued little risk taking

Critical Questions to discuss within your PLC Team: Have we established our team norms/expectations? What is our question? What issue are we addressing as a team? Now that we have chosen a solid question to focus on we can follow the Inquiry Model   Inquiry model – These three simple questions will help guide and focus each meeting What are we doing? (What is our purpose/ how are we addressing the issue?) How is it going? (Is it working? What will the evidence/results be?) Where to next? (What are we doing between now and the next meeting? What is the focus for the next meeting?)

DuFour: Maintaining a PLC is where the real work lies and where accountability has often been lost. Once a PLC is underway it is crucial that all of the hard work does not go to waste. Teachers must take a shared responsibility in sustaining and building upon what has been created.
