King Cotton Cotton became the staple with the growth of British textile industry Why Cotton? Cotton is where the money is

Ties between lower and upper South 3/5 Compromise Slave trade between upper and lower south

North and South Diverge Urban versus Rural Public Education Industry versus agriculture

Are they all like Tara? Complete village Kept most of their wealth in the slaves rather than finery and mansions Very isolated existence Women
