Representation

Intro The artist, Jaykae, has several music videos. For most of his songs he doesn’t have music videos but for the ones that do, they are professionally made. Usually, these music videos will be performance based, focusing predominantly on the artist himself and his friends. However, there is usually some sort of narrative that will follow his lyrics. The theme in most of these videos is often focused on street life and illegal activities. My video will aim to create a gritty display of crime and trying to leave that type of life behind. In the last few years, our genre, grime has become very popular with teenagers and young adults. This will appeal to our target audience due to the increasing interest in the genre.

Violence / crime theme To represent the theme of crime in our video, the protagonist and his friend will be dressed in clothes often worn by youths associated with this life. For example, the clothing will be dark and discreet, not to draw attention to themselves. Clothing items such as hoodies may be worn to help keep their identity hidden from the police et cetera. This will follow the usual convention associated with grime videos which is often the artist and his friends wearing a particular type of clothing. We will also include items such as blunt objects to use in our video as these will be used to cause violence. This cements the theme in our video.

Representation of setting For the setting, we have chosen to film around streets and paths, often away from the eyes of the public as this is often where illegal activities will take place in real life. We did this to create the most realistic interpretation of the song. The setting of a dark street or alleyway is an clear representation of the song and its lyrics. This will symbolise them carrying out illegal activities.

Representation of ages / Gender The age group present in our video will solely be people of late teenager/young adult. This is because I wish to create a realistic depiction of the age demographic of people involved in this life. This way, people of older generations may be able to relate as they have been this age before and may know of people involved in this lifestyle, or even been involved themselves. Our video will feature solely males as this is mostly the gender that is involved with crimes such as drug dealing, violent crime et cetera. Also, due to the small array of cast available, this is the main option.

Technical Codes We hope to use an array of camera shots like Jaykae does in videos such as Toothache. Scenes that feature the protagonist walking away from the camera in a panoramic shot or establishing shot will be useful to create a sense of scale and scenery. Wide angle shots may also be used to get a feel for the scenery. The lighting used will mostly be natural light as this will give a realistic view of our video without becoming too glamourous.
