Map key (legend)- Explains the symbols and shading on a map. 2. Know which ways lines of latitude and longitude run. Latitude lines run from east to west but measure north to south from the Equator. Longitude lines run from north to south but measure east to west from the Prime Meridian. What are the advantages of a globe? It is a model of the Earth and shows the continents and oceans as they really are. What are the disadvantages of a globe? A globe doesn’t show city streets and it would be impossible to carry around.

What are the advantages of a map? Maps can show many different things about Earth such as streets, boundaries, elevations. Map are easier to carry around. What two questions do geographers always ask? Where are things located? Why are they there? Latitude and longitude lines help geographers identify specific places on Earth. What are the five themes of geography? location, place, region, movement, and human-environment interaction

the location of a place relative to another place. Relative location is the location of a place relative to another place. Ex: Mississippi is bordered by Tennessee to the North and the Gulf of Mexico and SE Louisiana to the South. Arkansas and Louisiana to the West and Alabama to the East. Absolute location is describing a place’s exact position on Earth of terms of longitude and latitude. Ex: Mississippi is 32° 35’N, 89° 39’W Ex: Southaven is 34° N, 90° W

Movement is defined as exploring how people, goods, and ideas get from one place to another Ex: food, fuel, and other basic goods Describe human-environment interaction considers how people affect their environment, or their natural surroundings, and how their environment affects them. Ex: The movement of water from the Potomac River into Washington’s water system. A region is an area with at least one unifying physical or human feature. Ex: climate, landforms, population, or history

Location is described as where something is. Ex: Answers will vary Define place refers to the mix of human and nonhuman features at a given location. Ex: how many people live in a certain place, what kind of work do people do. Explain the difference between absolute and relative location. Absolute location is something or someone’s exact location and relative location describe something or someone being near/around something or someone else.

Service is any kind of work performed for others. Supply is the amount of a good or service that is available for use. Trade is the exchange of goods and services in a market. Imports are goods and services sold in a country that are produced in other countries. Exports are goods and services produced within a country and sold outside the country’s borders.

Culture is the beliefs, customs, practices, and behaviors of a particular nation or group of people. Ethics are standards of acceptable behavior. Society is a group humans with a shared culture who have organized themselves to meet their basic needs. Architecture is is the design and construction of buildings. 26. Social Structure is a pattern of organized relationships among groups of people within a society.
