Gün R. Semin Free University Amsterdam Enhancing the Self-monitoring Function of Science and its Contribution to Integrity in Research Gün R. Semin Free University Amsterdam

What is Research Integrity? A POSSIBLE ROADMAP

What is Research Integrity? Google search gives 941,000 hits

What is Scientific Integrity? Google search gives 941,000 hits Google search gives 6,580,000 hits

Integrity? Training in responsible conduct of research Political interference with due process of science Individual misconduct (e.g., data manipulation or falsification) Issues of authorship Collaboration Sharing of materials, conflict of interest, and a diversity of ethical moral dilemmas that emerge in the face of power relations, gender….. etc.

Integrity - My Focus Focus: Behavioral Sciences Goal: The reliability or robustness of data, and solutions that will enhance confidence in our data

Can we rely on reported data? Are they robust? Can we extend our methodological toolbox to ascertain the reliability of data? Etc.

Solution Create a Data Storage Center for the Behavioral Sciences with the collaboration national research agencies

ROAR

Why should a Data Center for the BS contribute to scientific integrity What advantages does an interagency Data Center offer? Quick feedback about erroneous analyses Rapid detection of data irregularities Enhance high standards of scientific integrity

Critical Issues What is data?

キ Why a Data Center 2 Public Funding - Public Access Scientific research and data production activities are largely funded by public funds, and predominantly supported by scientific organizations Publicly funded research data are largely not publicly accessible

Data Access Requests Wicherts, Borsboom, Kats, and Molenaar, 2006 asked the authors of 141 papers containing 249 separate data sets in top journals in the field

Percentages of Empirical Papers: Response Categories (Wicherts, Borsboom, Kats, and Molenaar, 2006) 70 % rejection rate journals. From Wicherts, Borsboom, Kats, and Molenaar, 2006

Some Critical Issues How could data storage be implemented? Financial and Budgetary Considerations for a Data Center Intellectual property rights that affect data access and sharing practices Informed consent and protection of privacy
