FRBR and FRAD as Implemented in RDA Presentation given at the ALCTS Preconference RDA, FRBR, and FRAD: Making the Connection July 10, 2009 by Tom Delsey

RDA Design Objectives Consistent, flexible, and extensible framework for the description of all types of resources and all types of content Compatible with internationally established principles, models, and standards Adaptable to the needs of a wide range of resource description communities

Aligning RDA with FRBR and FRAD Organizational structure of RDA RDA element set Categorization of resources Implementation scenarios

RDA Structure FRBR/FRAD Attributes FRBR/FRAD Relationships 1. Attributes of Manifestation and Item 2. Attributes of Work and Expression 3. Attributes of Person, Family, and Corporate Body 4. Attributes of Concept*, Object*, Event*, and Place 5. Primary Relationships 6. Relationships to Persons, Families, and Corporate Bodies Associated with a Resource 7. Subject Relationships* 8. Relationships between Works, Expressions, Manifestations, and Items 9. Relationships between Persons, Families, and Corporate Bodies 10. Relationships between Concepts*, Objects*, Events*, and Places*

Alignment with FRBR/FRAD User Tasks Attributes of Manifestation and Item Identifying Manifestations and Items = find / identify Describing Carriers = select Providing Acquisition and Access Information = obtain Attributes of Work and Expression Identifying Works and Expressions = find / identify Describing Content = select

RDA Element Set Alignment of RDA elements with FRBR/FRAD attributes and relationships RDA element sub-types and sub-elements RDA extensions to FRBR/FRAD

Alignment of RDA Elements with FRBR Attributes Title of the manifestation Title Statement of responsibility Edition/issue designation Edition statement Series statement Form of carrier Carrier type Terms of availability

RDA Element Sub-types FRBR attribute RDA element and element sub-types Title of the manifestation Title Title proper Parallel title proper Other title information Parallel other title information Variant title Earlier title proper Later title proper Key title Abbreviated title

RDA Sub-elements FRBR attribute RDA element and sub-elements Edition/issue designation Edition statement Designation of edition Parallel designation of edition Statement of responsibility relating to the edition Parallel statement of responsibility relating to the edition Designation of a named revision of an edition Parallel designation of a named revision of an edition Statement of responsibility relating to a named revision of an edition Parallel statement of responsibility relating to a named revision of an edition

Alignment with FRBR/FRAD Relationships RDA elements person/family/corporate body is associated with work Creator Other person, family, or corporate body associated with a work is associated with expression Contributor is associated with manifestation Producer Publisher Distributor Manufacturer Other person, family, or corporate body associated with a manifestation

RDA Extensions to FRBR Additional elements Production method Layout Form of notation Extended scope of elements Generation – microform, projected media + audio, digital Scale – cartographic content + still image, three-dimensional form Additional element sub-types Video characteristics – + broadcast standard Digital file characteristics – + regional encoding, transmission speed

Categorization of resources Media type (audio, computer, microform, video, etc.) FRBR categories: sound recording, electronic resource, microform, video projection, etc. Carrier type (audio disc, audio reel, audio tape, etc.) FRBR attribute: form of carrier Content type (notated music, text, spoken word, still image, etc.) FRBR attribute: form of expression Mode of issuance (multipart monograph, serial, integrating resource) FRBR attributes: intended termination / extensibility / revisability

RDA Implementation Scenarios Designed to be compatible with MARC 21 Assumption: most libraries creating RDA data are currently using an ILS that imports/exports data in MARC 21 Aligned with FRBR and FRAD models Assumption: libraries will begin migrating to a new generation of systems using database structures reflecting entity-relationship models
