A PASSION TO BECOME LIKE JESUS CHRIST Nick Peterson

Colossians 1:28-29 28 Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. 29 For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.

Colossians 3:1-17 1 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

Colossians 3:1-17 (cont.) 5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 On account of these the wrath of God is coming. 7 In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. 8 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. 11 Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all.

Colossians 3:1-17 (cont.) 12 Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Colossians 2:13-14 13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.

C.S. Lewis – The Weight of Glory "It is a serious thing to live in a society of possible gods and goddesses, to remember that the dullest and most uninteresting person you talk to may one day be a creature which, if you saw it now, you would be strongly tempted to worship, or else a horror and a corruption such as you now meet, if at all, only in a nightmare. All day long we are, in some degree, helping each other to one or other of these destinations. It is in the light of these overwhelming possibilities, it is with the awe and the circumspection proper to them, that we should conduct all our dealings with one another, all friendships, all loves, all play, all politics. There are no 'ordinary' people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilizations – these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub and exploit – immortal horrors or everlasting splendors. This does not mean that we are to be perpetually solemn. We must play. But our merriment must be of that kind (and it is, in fact, the merriest kind) which exists between people who have, from the outset, taken each other seriously –"

Questions to Ask Yourself Do I agree with what God says about sin and my own personal sinfulness? – Do you agree with what God says about sin? When you do sin, do you confess your sin or do you hide it? Do you believe your sin is forgiven in Christ? Do I desire to know and obey God’s commands, as revealed in His Word? – Do you know God’s commands? Do you read the Bible and seek to understand it? Do you desire to follow God’s will for your life? Do you feel God’s commands are good or a burden? Is the pattern of my life remorse when I sin, a desire to kill sin, and growing in obedience? – How do you feel when you sin? Do you try to obey? Are you growing in both an awareness of your own sin and in progress in putting it to death? Do you feel joy when you obey, even when it’s difficult?

Discussion Questions What stood out to you most from the message or the Bible verses and why? Which of the 4 Directives (Identify with Christ, Seek the Eternal, Kill your Sin, Put on Christ) seems most difficult for you to grasp? What do you think will be some of the differences between a Christian who is seeking to grow with a good understanding of who they already are in Christ compared to a Christian who is seeking to grow without a good understand of who they are in Christ? How might you respond to someone who says, “I’m already forgiven because of Jesus, so I don’t need to worry about killing my sin or being more like Jesus”?
