First introductions…what questions can you ask? Hello? What’s your name?

When students say… I feel like… How are you? I am fine. Thank you. And you? I feel like…

Instead use… How are you doing? How’s it going? How are you today? How are you feeling? Are you having a good day? What’s up? – actions - I got a new job. What’s new? – actions - Not much.

I’m fine, thank you and …

Instead use… I’m great / fantastic I’m okay I’m awful / terrible I’m doing well I’m not bad I’m hungry / tired I’m pretty good I’m all right (alright) I’m exhausted (beat) = very tired Good Same old, same old I’ve been better Excellent I couldn’t be better

Why not? 3. money – How much do you make? 4. religion – Are you Christian? 5. politics – I love/hate the President! 6. anything negative – This class sucks! 7. anything negative about their appearance - You look so tired today. Are you getting fat?
