The Runaway Scrape

San Jacinto Who? Sam Houston Deaf Smith Santa Anna

San Jacinto When? April 21, 1836

San Jacinto Where? Along the Buffalo Bayou and San Jacinto River

San Jacinto Why? Santa Anna was trying to destroy David Burnet and the Republic of Texas’ temporary capital in Harrisburg. Burnet and members escaped to Galveston Bay. Santa Anna followed. Sam Houston and his army were waiting.

San Jacinto What? On the morning of April 2o, Santa Anna could see Sam Houston’s army in the woods at the edge of Buffalo Bayou. He attempted to draw the Texas out into the open. A skirmish occurred, but no major casualties.

San Jacinto What? Santa Anna moved his troops behind a ridge that evening so that the camps could not see each other. The next morning General Cos arrived with 540 more men.

San Jacinto What? Houston ordered Deaf Smith to destroy Vince’s Bridge to prevent troops from coming or going. This meant no more reinforcements and no retreat for either army.

San Jacinto What? Santa Anna expected an attack that morning, but when nothing had happened by mid afternoon he allowed his troops to rest. At 3:30 pm the Texans attacked. The battle lasted 18 minutes. 630 Mexicans died, 730 were taken prisoner. Only 9 Texans died.

San Jacinto What? Santa Anna tried to escape but was captured the next day while trying to pass as a regular soldier. His own men gave him away. Houston forced Santa Anna to order the remaining troops out of Texas.
