Mechanisms Vocabulary Automation and Robotics

Mechanism A device that transmits movement Can change direction of output Can change speed of output Can change the type of movement Can increase the mechanical advantage

Vocabulary Input Movement Output Movement Reversible The work or effort being put into the mechanism. Output Movement The work the mechanism is performing. Reversible Output movement may be used as input movement.

Speed and Torque Input Speed Speed at which the effort is put into the mechanism. Output Speed Speed at which the output moves. Torque A twisting force If Speed Increases, then Torque decreases. If Speed decreases, then Torque increases. SPEED & TORQUE HAVE AN INVERSE RELATIONSHIP

Types of Movement Rotary Linear Reciprocating Oscillating Movement in a circular motion. Linear Movement in one direction in a straight line. Reciprocating Movement goes back and forth in a straight line. Oscillating Movement along an arched path; back and forth.
