Build up navy: build steam powered steel hulled ships to protect oversea trade Expand Navy: Had to increase budget 1883 built 3 cruisers and 2 battleships Naval Act 1890: construction of more battleships, gunboats, torpedo boats 1900: US had one of the most powerful navies in world (suggested US was willing and able to confront enemy on open sea)

Explain the idea of preserving the American spirit of Imperialism Feared US was losing vitality and expansion over seas might restore country’s pioneer spirit Social Darwinism justified expansion: expansion was nations destiny and wanted to introduce Christianity and modern civilization around the world

8. What was the public opinion towards Imperialism? Wanted new markets around the world Favored trade relations with other countries RESULT: political and military involvement tended to follow (example wars)
