Weekly agenda Monday – Pythagorean Theorem Tuesday – Pythagorean Theorem Word Problems & Coordinate Plane Problems Wednesday – Angles Thursday – Misleading Data & Best Fit Lines (Substitute) Friday - Quiz

SWBAT solve basic Pythagorean Theorem word problems. Today’s agenda SWBAT solve basic Pythagorean Theorem word problems.

Pythagorean Theorem Rap Pythagorean Theorem goes with right triangles. Hypotenuse is across from the right angle. Legs are ‘a’ and ‘b’, Hypotenuse is ‘c’, Plug the numbers in and see how easy it can be. A squared plus B squared equals C squared. Pythagorean Theorem is a wonderful equation. Just gotta make sure you plug in the right location. Draw the triangle, Label the sides, Then you solve the problems and get them all right. A squared plus B squared equals C squared.

Example 1 Find the missing side. x in 8 in 17 in

Example 2 Find the missing side. 24 ft 7 ft x ft

Whiteboard Races The class will be divided into groups. You will be given 45 seconds for each problem. Every person on the team must complete the problem and have an answer before you determine the answer to the problem together. Once the group agrees on an answer, write the answer on your whiteboard. Once the time is up, each group will raise their whiteboard in the air. All groups with the correct answer will earn a point. If your group answer the problem correctly, you will then have the choice to shoot the ball into the trashcan and score 1, 2, or 3 pts. The group with the most points will win a prize!

Do Now – (⅕ x 20), (⅓ x 27), (⅙ x 78) 12 ft x ft 6 ft Jalen solved the problem below incorrectly. CORRECT his mistake & EXPLAIN what he did wrong. a2+b2=c2 a2+122=62 a2+144=36 -36 -36 a2=108 √a2=√108 a = ~10.4 ft What is the solution for x, when f(x) = g(x), given f(x) = 4x – 7 and g(x) = 2x + 9. 12 ft x ft 6 ft

SWBAT solve Pythagorean theorem problems involving coordinate planes. Today’s objective SWBAT solve Pythagorean theorem problems involving coordinate planes. Homework - Worksheet

Example 1 Find the hypotenuse. Put dots at the edges of the triangle. Determine the distance between the dots by counting the spaces between. Plug your info into the Pythagorean Theorem.

Example 2 Find the length of the line. Draw a line from one dot to the x axis. Draw a line from the other dot to the y-axis. Draw a dot where the two lines connect. Use the last example to figure out the length.

Example 3 Try this one with your partner. Determine the length of the line.

Example 4 Work on this one with your partner. Determine the perimeter of the triangle.

Pythagorean theorem bingo Each of you will get a BINGO card. You will have 2 minutes to quickly fill in your BINGO sheet randomly with the answers on the next slide. You will have 1 minute to work each problem and then determine if your answer is on your BINGO card. If the answer is on your card, you may mark it off, otherwise, try for the next problem. We will not go over the questions, it is your job to determine the correct answers! Call out BINGO if you get 5 answers in a row!

Do Now – (√64 - √16), (√100), (√169) A red blood cell is 8 x 10-6 meters long. A skin cell is 3 x 10-5 meters long. How many times longer is the skin cell than the red blood cell? What is the slope of the line that crosses through the following points: (4, -6) and (-5, 7)? The speed of sound is approximately 343 meters per second. What is the total amount of time it will take a sound wave to travel 2 kilometers?

SWBAT determine the missing angle given a diagram. Today’s objective SWBAT determine the missing angle given a diagram. Homework - Worksheet

Angles review The following angles are congruent (equal): Vertical – angles across from each other 1 & 3, 2 & 4, 5 & 7, 6 & 8 Alternate interior – angles on the inside of the parallel lines, on opposite sides of the transversal, and paired with different parallel lines. 4 & 6, 5 & 3 Alternate exterior – angles outside the parallel lines, on opposite sides of the transversal, and paired with different parallel lines. 1 & 7, 8 & 2 Corresponding – one is interior and one is exterior, on the same side of the transversal, and paired with different parallel lines. 1 & 5, 4 & 8, 2 & 6, 3 & 7

Angles review Angles that lie on the same line together are supplementary and add up to 180 degrees. Angles that make a right angle together are complementary and add up to 90 degrees.

Angles review Watch as I walk through this one. Example 1: Determine the measurements of the missing angles.

Angles review 11 35° Work on this one with your partner. Example 2: Determine the measurements of the missing angles. 11 35°

Sum races You are all in groups. Each group will be issued a card with 4 problems on it. It is your job as a group to solve the problems on the card. After you have solved all of the problems on the card, you will add up the answers to get the ‘sum’. You will bring your sum up to me and I will tell you whether or not you solved the problems correctly. If the sum is not right, you will then go back to your group to rework the problems – I will not tell you which problem you missed, it is your group with your group members to check the answers and find the wrong problem(s). If you get the sum correct, I will give you another card. The first group to get the sums correct for all cards will win a prize!

Do Now – (½ x 8), (5.5 x 2), (√169) Write an example of a rational and irrational number. What is the solution to the following system of equations: 5x – 2y = 12 & 3x + 4 = y If light travels at 1.86 x 105 miles per second, how far will it travel in 500 seconds?

Today’s objective SWBAT identify types of scatterplots, determine equations for lines of best fit, and determine why data is misleading.

Do Now – (⅘ x x 5), (⅕ x 60), (½ x 26) Please clear off you desk of everything except a pencil, piece of paper (to cover quiz with), and a calculator. Please wait for further instruction.
