Note Taking

Why is note taking important?

Strategy #1 Boxes and Bullets Use primarily for main ideas and supporting details Works for most texts Benefits: Can clearly see main ideas Easy to transfer into a writing draft Helps determine importance Keep in mind: Find main ideas first Leave space to add more supporting details later on

Strategy #2 Cornell Works for all texts Benefits: Keep in mind: Use summary to check for understanding Review and reflect in the left column after reading/listening/viewing Faster Keep in mind: Notes must be summarized and reviewed for main ideas and key questions after notes are taken

Strategy #3 Outline Works for most texts Benefits: Keep in mind: Helps to understand relationships between main ideas and details Helps to determine hierarchy of importance Keep in mind: Find main ideas first Leave extra space in case more details need to be added as you take notes
