Punctuating speech

Oliver said, “I want some more.” Oliver said “I want some more.” Which is correct? Oliver said, “I want some more.” Oliver said “I want some more.” Oliver said, “I want some more”. Oliver said, “I want some more.’

Which is correct? Oliver said, “I want some more.” But why?

Oliver said, “I want some more.” Firstly, it is important to remember that a sentence begins with a capital letter… Punctuation ending the quote must go inside the quotation marks. Oliver said, “I want some more.” Because the quotation is a sentence in its own right, it must also begin with a capital letter. The quotation exists within the broader sentence, so only a comma is required here. and ends with a full stop.

Oliver said, “I want some more.” “I want some more,” said Oliver. can also be written as “I want some more,” said Oliver. Still a full sentence

“I want some more,” said Oliver. Punctuation ending the quote, still inside quotation marks. “I want some more,” said Oliver. Still a full sentence

There is one more rule.

When characters in a text (film or book) speak, it’s called dialogue.

When characters speak, they take turns.

So, the rule is: Change speaker = change line.

Change speaker = change line. EXAMPLE “Want something from the shop?” asked Tom. “No thanks,” replied Jess. “Are you sure?” “Actually, I do need some milk please.”
