8 Quotation marks show direct speech (the exact words of the speaker).
A new paragraph is used for each new speaker. “ ”

9 Direct speech consists of two parts:
The speaker tag. The actual words that are being spoken. Amy declared, “I’m happy when there’s pasta on the menu!”

10 Speaker tags help us understand who is speaking (Amy, Peter etc
Speaker tags help us understand who is speaking (Amy, Peter etc.) and how they are speaking (shouting, whispering etc.). Amy declared, “I’m happy when there’s pasta on the menu!”

11 The actual words: Must be enclosed by quotation marks. First word must begin with a capital letter. Punctuation is used before adding the closing set of quotation marks. Amy declared, “I’m happy when there’s pasta on the menu!”

12 Kelly shouted, “School is already really cool!”
Show direct speech by using quotation marks at the beginning and at the end of the quoted sentence. Kelly shouted, “School is already really cool!”

13

14 Kelly shouted, “School is already really cool!”
A directly quoted sentence begins with a capital letter, just like a regular sentence. Kelly shouted, “School is already really cool!”

15

16 Kelly shouted, “School is already really cool!”
A directly quoted sentence ends with a comma,, question mark or an exclamation mark and then a quotation mark. Kelly shouted, “School is already really cool!”

17

18 Direct speech can be written in three ways.
It depends on the position of the speaker tag!

19 Kelly shouted, “School is already really cool!”
Speaker tag at the beginning: Follow the speaker tag with a comma and then write the spoken words (use quotation marks). Kelly shouted, “School is already really cool!”

20

21 “School is already really cool!” said Kelly.
Speaker tag at the end: The spoken words will always end with a comma, exclamation mark or a question mark, but never a full stop. Place quotation marks around the spoken words. Follow the spoken words with the speaker tag. “School is already really cool!” said Kelly.

22

23 Speaker tag in the middle:
The speaker tag splits the spoken words into two parts. The second part is called the follow-on sentence. Use two commas to show that the sentence has been split in two. The first comma inside the first set of quotation marks and the second comma after the speaker tag. The follow on sentence must not start with a capital letter, unless the first word is a proper noun or the pronoun “I”. “School will be fun," Peter shouted, “if we get free milkshakes every Friday!”
