1- Ocular (eyepiece) 2- Coarse adjustment knob 3- Fine adjustment knob 4- Low power objective lens 5- Arm 6- On/off switch 7- Body tube 8- Revolving nosepiece 9- High power objective lens 10- Medium power objective lens 11- Stage clip 12- Stage 13- Diaphragm 14- Light source 15- Base

Functions of Microscope Parts Eyepiece: Magnifies objects; allows you to view objects Coarse focus knob: Focuses objects on low or medium power Fine focus knob: Focuses objects on high power

Stage: Where microscope slides are placed Diaphragm: Can be moved to adjust the amount of light Revolving Nosepiece: Allows you to change the objective lens (low, medium, high power)

Magnification… Each objective lens has its own MAGNIFICATION POWER. Low power = 4x magnified Medium power = 10x magnified High power = 40x magnified You can multiply this value by the eyepiece magnification to calculate the TOTAL magnification for each lens. The Eyepiece = 10x magnified

Calculate the TOTAL magnification for the following: Low Power Objective Lens = 40x magnification Medium Power Objective Lens =100x magnification High Power Objective Lens = 400x magnification

Resolving Power Ability of a microscope to distinguish two close together images as being separate
