Respiratory System

to get oxygen to your cells Function: to get oxygen to your cells

Main Organ: lungs

We inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide breathe in exhale - breathe out

Oxygen - the gas in the air that is needed to burn food energy to stay alive

the waste product given off carbon dioxide - the waste product given off when exhaling

Process of the Respiratory System 1. Air enters into your body through your mouth and your nose.

2. The air goes down your trachea to your lungs.

3. As you breathe in, your chest gets bigger and your lungs fill with air

4. Your trachea divides to form a system of tubes in your lungs 4. Your trachea divides to form a system of tubes in your lungs. These tubes look like the branches of a tree. The branches get smaller and smaller until they end in air sacs.

5. All around the air sacs are tiny blood vessels called capillaries.

6. The walls of the air sacs and the capillaries are very thin, therefore, oxygen passes easily through these wall. The air moves into the blood. Carbon dioxide moves the other way.

What path does oxygen take to reach the lungs? QUIZ TIME What path does oxygen take to reach the lungs?

It goes from the nose or mouth through the trachea to the lungs. ANSWER It goes from the nose or mouth through the trachea to the lungs.

What is the job of the respiratory system?

To carry blood (oxygen) to and from body cells. ANSWER To carry blood (oxygen) to and from body cells.
